Artist's Description

Tarzan and His Mate was released in 1934 just prior to the production code coming into effect in Hollywood that would put restrictions upon filmmakers for what they could put into their movies. Knowing the code was coming into effect, the producers of the Johnny Weismuller Tarzans decided to push the boundaries as much as possible. The film included a nude underwater swim with Jane. Maureen O'Sullivan admitted years later that a body double was used. However, she also said in the same interview that the producers had done some early tests to have her appear topless throughout most of the film. When it became too cumbersome, however, to come up with ways to hide her nipples, that wardrobe choice was abandoned in favor of the costume you see depicted here.

About Bryan Bustard

Bryan Bustard

I consider myself primarily an illustrator. I never quite fit in with others, so I grew up isolated and found much of my comfort in movies, comic books, music, and books. My artistic influences include fantasy illustrators from the "Brandywine" school of Howard Pyle to the best comic book artists of today. I get my inspiration from such widely diverse sources as the absurd, music, classic movies, myth, pin-up, fantasy literature, and my Catholic sensibilities. For a number of my original pieces, feel free to purchase some more modestly priced ones at my Etsy page. I may be adding more as time goes on. https://www.etsy.com/shop/bryanbartist?ref=hdr_shop_menu More than willing to do commissions, I am adept at portraiture of...
