This was commissioned by a former employer who asked for sunflowers against a white background. Certainly an interesting piece. With acrylic, you usually want to work from dark to light. In this case, I used a watercolor technique of working light to dark. I did the background drawing first with outlines in a tan/orange line for the flower and in green for the leaves. I then filled in the entire drawing with yellow and added everything else from that. Only at the end did I go back to the acrylic technique and add a few more highlights in the sunflower seeds with white and yellow, finishing off the petals with a white highlight.
I consider myself primarily an illustrator. I never quite fit in with others, so I grew up isolated and found much of my comfort in movies, comic books, music, and books. My artistic influences include fantasy illustrators from the "Brandywine" school of Howard Pyle to the best comic book artists of today. I get my inspiration from such widely diverse sources as the absurd, music, classic movies, myth, pin-up, fantasy literature, and my Catholic sensibilities.
