This was one of those portraits that was a delight to do. Many times, I consider portraits tedious, and most artists will tell you its hard to paint children with expression without making them look older than they are. But the original source material for this was so crisp and detailed that I found myself totally absorbed in doing the painting. At the time I was in the final months of working in a warehouse and was commissioned to do this by one of my co-workers.
I consider myself primarily an illustrator. I never quite fit in with others, so I grew up isolated and found much of my comfort in movies, comic books, music, and books. My artistic influences include fantasy illustrators from the "Brandywine" school of Howard Pyle to the best comic book artists of today. I get my inspiration from such widely diverse sources as the absurd, music, classic movies, myth, pin-up, fantasy literature, and my Catholic sensibilities.
