This has been a great painting to work on. I was asked to listen to Kenny Chesney's "When I See This Bar" and was given the idea that on one side, we'd have a bar on a beach. On the other, would be a smoky old hometown bar with the bartender in the middle tying both ideas together. Planning this painting, I selected a number of photos to work from for reference, placed the main photos together in some order, and then proceed to figure out how to integrate the two bars together. There was no thumbnail, no well planned out composition. After that I just had in my mind where everything would be, AND I kept adding to it as time went on.
I consider myself primarily an illustrator. I never quite fit in with others, so I grew up isolated and found much of my comfort in movies, comic books, music, and books. My artistic influences include fantasy illustrators from the "Brandywine" school of Howard Pyle to the best comic book artists of today. I get my inspiration from such widely diverse sources as the absurd, music, classic movies, myth, pin-up, fantasy literature, and my Catholic sensibilities.
