This painting is a commission done for a couple married on August 21, 2017. Both are "geeks" and the bride is obsessed with this character from the DC Comics Batman books and Batman: The Animated Series. Initially it was only supposed to be a fleshed out version of the character as portrayed in the animated series (depicted in the playing card) but after researching images of Harley Quinn (the Joker's girlfriend), I decided to go with a more "realistic" image. I work at a grocery store since I can't currently make a full time living at art, and while thinking of doing this painting, a customer complained about an implied nude image of actress Sofia Vergara on the cover of Women's Health magazine. I liked the pose, so with a few adjustments, mostly adding clothes and moving her right arm, I copied that pose. I changed the simple wooden block the actress was sitting on to the giant sledgehammer often used by Harley Quinn, and added some toy chattering teeth, some bombs and a box of...
I consider myself primarily an illustrator. I never quite fit in with others, so I grew up isolated and found much of my comfort in movies, comic books, music, and books. My artistic influences include fantasy illustrators from the "Brandywine" school of Howard Pyle to the best comic book artists of today. I get my inspiration from such widely diverse sources as the absurd, music, classic movies, myth, pin-up, fantasy literature, and my Catholic sensibilities.
